In John’s Gospel account of the wedding feast at Cana Mary, the mother of Jesus, plays an eminently significant role. She, as the new Eve, chases Jesus out of the garden, the safe place. “On the third day” means “pay attention”. We encounter a letting go of both mother and Son, one Fr. Eric tells us we can imitate. He closes appropriately with one of Mary Oliver’s finest poems, “Black River of Loss”.
